Obesity has become one of the most common medical conditions in the United States. According to the American Obesity Association, over 60 percent of American Adults can be categorized and being obese. Heart disease, high blood pressure, and even colon cancer are some of the side effects that we hear publicized these days. And although these conditions are feared, they are always spoken about as something that may happen in the future if we do not lose weight. Most of us are more concentrated on dealing with the problems we have NOW, not preventing what may happen LATER. Stress, fatigue, anxiety, and even Back Pain are things we deal with NOW, on a regular basis.
But what many of us may not realize is that at least one of these problems we deal with right now can be reduced if not cured by losing weight. BACK PAIN. It’s just another part of the everyday lives of many of us. We’ve come to accept it. But wouldn’t it be nice if we could actually go a day without actually having to deal with the agony? Well perhaps we can, and losing weight might actually be the way to do just that.
Some of the weight related back problems that we all either face now or may very soon can be degenerative disc disease, osteoprorsis, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis(slippage of discs in the lower back), and even osteoarthritis. Those are just a few of the major back problems that can be caused by obesity, not to mention the everyday back pain caused by the strain obesity puts on our spine and back muscles.
One of the primary purposes of the spine is to carry the weight of the body and to disperse the weight throughout the body during rest and activity. When the spine has to deal with excess weight it can be put under undue stress which can lead to misalignment and damage.
Eliminate Your Back Pain...With These 5 Steps
The lower back or “Lumbar Region” is especially susceptible to the effects of excess weight. The muscles in the back, pelvis, and thighs also become weak and inflexible do to the lack of exercise. These muscles become weak and cannot handle the burden of the excess weight which is a primary reason for our daily backaches. Since these muscles can’t handle the weight they are unable to maintain the alignment of the spine as well as allow poor body posture. These factors will only worsen the pain and discomfort in the back and will eventually lead to the degenerative conditions mentioned earlier.
An unhealthy diet combined with an inactive lifestyle can decrease the density, or strength of the bones, causing osteoporosis. When the strength and integrity of the spinal column becomes weakened, we are more susceptible to fractures. Fractures of the spinal vertebrate are very painful and can become disabling. Excessive weight also puts increased pressure and stress on the Spinal(facet) joints of the spine which leads to osteoarthritis.
Obesity can also extend or prevent the healing process following an injury. Since the back and spine can’t handle the everyday stress of the excess weight, there is no way it can heal an injury. This can turn minor back injuries into lifelong conditions. Back pain, neck pain, and headaches can also be caused by poor body posture which a mentioned before is usually a result of obesity.
The spine and supporting muscles in the back need a certain level of physical activity to remain strong and healthy. The problem then is that is can be difficult for many obese people to get exercise. When many of us try any type of physical activity we quickly become fatigued. This is one of the primary reasons why obese people give up when they attempt to exercise; it’s just too hard and painful. So we go on day after day dealing with our back pain and allow it to get worse and worse. This is because by not exercising at all we are allowing our muscles to become weaker and weaker all the while we are usually putting on more weight; and so the cycle goes on and on.
But the cycle can be broken. By exercising gently we are slowly strengthening the muscles in the back. The more regularly we gently exercise the stronger our muscles get. The stronger they get the more they can exercise. So now the cycle slowly begins to reverse until eventually the cycle is going entirely in our favor. And as the cycle reverses the back pain will also get better and better. By incorporating a healthier diet the process will move even faster. How do we “gently” exercise? Walking and swimming are easy ways to exercise. These are things that are low impact and can be done in small increments. Walk around the house once or twice a day during commercial break, walk up a flight of stairs before getting on the elevator, or even walk to the fridge instead of asking someone to bring it to you. Start these small steps and before long you can do more and more. Start reversing the cycle.
The fact is we already know how unhealthy it is to be obese. We already know how uncomfortable it is to be overweight. And we sure as heck know how agonizing our back pain is every day. We don’t need to be reminded by everyone on tv or in the magazines what may happen later in life if we remain obese. But what might actually get our attention is the amount of pain and discomfort we can relieve today, every day, if we just start to slowly reverse the cycle.
